Standing up against violence and racism during COVID-19

Over the past few weeks, we have seen a significant increase in domestic and racialized violence in our own community and around the country. Violence on the street, in the home, online – in so many places – has escalated during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Racism is violence and the most recent attacks on those of Asian decent are based on both gender and race.

We are seeing these issues become exacerbated in the recent months. People who were already angry at those of another race other than their own are acting on their anger. Misogynists are escalating their violence against women and there are less resources to deal with needs around this.

Racism, violence, anger and misogyny are as dangerous and deadly as this pandemic. “Be kind” or “stay calm” are not words that the violent oppressor will heed during this terrible time.

We as a society need to call out the violence and provide bridges to safety for those who are targeted or at risk.

The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre stands with those who have been affected by violence during this time. We will continue to do what is in our power to protect and empower the clients we serve and members of our community.
