Peer volunteer highlight: Meet Sam

Nov 14, 2023

Volunteers are a fundamental aspect of DEWC. Today, we want to highlight Sam, who seized the opportunity to be a part of our Skills Development Program.

Sam joined our Skills Development program last fall and she has been thriving ever since! She first became interested in volunteering when a friend of hers joined the Skills Development Program, “I heard that [my friend] was doing it and I thought if she can do it, I can do it.”

Sam works at the front desk as a receptionist. Some of her tasks include answering the phone, greeting people, handing out supplies, cleaning her working space and she also helps out staff members in other capacities as well. Her favourite part of volunteering is saying hi to all of the pets that come through the front door.

It’s really amazing to see how far Sam has come. Since she began last year, she’s gotten housing and is more confident in herself. She is such an incredible person to have around – her work ethic is undeniable and we’re so lucky to have her!” – DEWC staff member

Outside of work Sam loves to draw, make art and also loves fashion! She finds a lot of her clothing at our drop-in centre and particularly loves wearing blazers.

Thank you Samantha for all of that you do for the Women’s Centre and for our community!
