Her Journey, Her Power: Esther’s Story

May 7, 2026

Esther is a devoted mother, talented hairstylist, and valued member of the DEWC community. Originally from Tanzania, she moved to Vancouver in 2023 and began volunteering with DEWC shortly after. Known for her warmth, creativity, and joyful spirit, Esther brings kindness and laughter wherever she goes.

When Esther arrived in Vancouver from Tanzania in 2023, she was searching for a fresh start, a place where she and her daughter, Lineth, could build a safe and hopeful future together.

Adjusting to life in a new country came with challenges, but Esther quickly found something meaningful at DEWC: community. About a year ago, she began volunteering with the Centre, giving back to other women while creating connections of her own. Through DEWC, Esther found a space rooted in care, dignity, and belonging.

As a single mother, Esther says her daughter is her greatest source of strength and joy. Together, they are building a new life grounded in love, resilience, and possibility.

Before immigrating to Canada, Esther worked professionally braiding hair in East Africa. Hairstyling is more than a skill for her, it is an art form, a source of confidence, and a way of bringing people together. Today, she dreams of opening her own salon in Vancouver, one that not only offers hair services but also creates opportunities to teach others the art of braiding and self-expression.

Esther’s creativity and confidence were on full display at DEWC’s Herstory Fashion Show, where she stood out for doing her own hair and makeup. Her passion for fashion and beauty reflects the pride she carries in herself and her culture.

Whether she is hiking, swimming, singing, volunteering, or making others laugh, Esther brings warmth wherever she goes. Her sense of humor and generosity of spirit have made a lasting impact on both staff and community members alike.

At DEWC, women like Esther continue to remind us that when women have access to safe spaces, community support, and opportunities to thrive, incredible things are possible.

We would like to thank Esther for sharing her story and for her ongoing commitment to supporting women and children in the Downtown Eastside through her work with DEWC.
