Her Journey, Her Power: Jasper’s Story

May 7, 2026

After moving to Canada from Beijing six years ago, Jasper found connection and community at DEWC. An artist, lifelong learner, and compassionate community member, Jasper brings warmth, creativity, and care to those around her. Through her dedication to supporting others, she is helping build a more connected and inclusive future for women facing isolation and language barriers.

When Jasper moved to Vancouver from Beijing six years ago, she came to support her daughter’s career in design and landscape architecture. While she misses the bright sunshine of home, she has grown to love Vancouver’s natural beauty, mild climate, and peaceful outdoor spaces.

An artist at heart, Jasper expresses herself through painting. Using acrylics, she creates vibrant works inspired by the world around her. Nature is one of her greatest inspirations, especially flowers. Sometimes, she carefully selects blooms from her daughter’s garden and transforms their beauty into art, preserving fleeting moments through colour and form.

Jasper finds joy and peace outdoors. She loves hiking and has a special appreciation for roses, lilies, and rhododendrons. Her curiosity and passion for learning extend far beyond art. A dedicated reader and lifelong learner, Jasper takes humanities courses through UBC to deepen her understanding of people and community care. Every day, she practices reading English and follows current events to continue building her confidence and connection in Canada.

For the past three years, Jasper has been part of the DEWC community. She says the Centre has become a place of comfort, belonging, and friendship. She deeply values the welcoming atmosphere and admires the care shown toward women, especially seniors, who may otherwise experience isolation or barriers to support.

Jasper believes strongly in the importance of helping others feel seen, connected, and included. She is especially passionate about supporting older Chinese-speaking women who may struggle with language barriers or limited social connections. One day, she hopes to teach English to women in her community, helping them feel more confident navigating daily life and building meaningful relationships.

Whether through her artwork, her kindness, or her quiet encouragement of others, Jasper brings light into every room she enters. Her compassion and generosity continue to strengthen the DEWC community in countless ways.

We would like to thank Jasper for sharing her story and for her ongoing commitment to supporting women and children in the Downtown Eastside through her work with DEWC.
